回家的感觉 @ Katasumi Koohii 一隅珈琲

Had my afternoon tea at Katasumi Koohii (一隅珈琲) situated within Grassroots Book Room (草根书室) since returning from my solo Tokyo trip. 
Going to Katasumi Koohii cafe gave me 回家的感觉. I found out by accident a while back that the owners are Taiwanese too, like my mother. No wonder. :) 
The cafe doesn't have an expansive menu but it didn't matter to me. The owners' 诚意 more than make up for the menu. I enjoyed the pairing of my Red Ruby black tea with the Salted Caramel roll cake which is soft, fragrant and not overly sweet. I enjoyed the quiet ambience of the cafe which is perfect for doing a bit of reading and/or doing a bit of work.

Ondeh Ondeh Cake

Ondeh ondeh, the classic Malay kueh which are traditional green-coloured balls of rice cake filled with liquid palm sugar (gula melaka) and coated in grated coconut, has always been a favourite dessert for my father and I. (Yes, we both have sweet tooth!) 
Now there is also ondeh ondeh cake which I can indulge in!

Belated Birthday Celebration

As I got home late last night, we celebrated my father's birthday this morning with the cake I bought. But I gave him his birthday present, a red packet before the day ended on 30 April.

Happy Birthday again, Father/ Grandfather.

Butter Cream Cakes

My colleagues/friends and I had butter cream cakes for snack. 

One of them had never eaten such butter cream cakes before! :O Sigh. Generation gap.
Butter cream cakes are a fond childhood memory of mine. Nowadays, only the tradtional/ old school bakeries sell such butter cream cakes.

Had to do some unexpected work with a colleague on my birthday! :( But I was satisfactorily compensated with the dessert as the first of my birthday celebration lol. :)

Second celebration - Dinner at Wings Bar

Don't worry, I didn't drink, can't anyway, allergic to alcohol lol. I had the Japanese Zero (Teriyaki flavour) Wings 6 pieces meal set that came with coleslaw, fries, vegetable sticks and cheese dip. The wings were quite good, juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
I was more excited with the bar itself because it has a WWII aviation theme. I love the movie, Memphis Belle, one of the very few war movies I love, and Wings bar reminds me of "Memphis Belle" with its airbase hangar decor, aircraft runway, sandbags under the tables, and aircraft memorabilia all around the bar. :) There is also a replica WWII aircraft at the entrance of the bar. Within the bar are two Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII flight combat simulators (sitting arcade games). Darn, I ran out of $1 coins or else I would have played a game or two, maybe three haha. :P

Third celebration - Cake at Home

When I came home, the girls quickly brought out my birthday cake! They were more excited than I am to cut the cake haha. :) I later Skyped with my brother, my lovely sis-in-law and my three handsome nephews in UK. My sis-in-law led the birthday song singing with lots of laughing from the kids. It was great fun! :)
What a great birthday I had - celebrated it with my colleagues, my friends and my family!

Today is Marieann's 10th birthday. We celebrated her birthday at lunch at Aerin's Cafe & Expresso Bar, Raffles City. (Yes, we are back at Raffles City again lol) Marieann had her favourite dish, Seafood spaghetti in tomato sauce. I tried the Duck a La Orange and Juliane and her father shared a Hickery BBQ Pork Ribs. I totally enjoyed my duck leg with its crispy skin and duck fat lol. :P The sauce which was sweet and citrusy went well with the duck leg, making it less cloying. The pork ribs were yummy, tender and juicy. :) Marieann's spaghetti was good too as the sauce was freshly made.




I shared my dessert, Profiteroles with Marieann and Juliane. The choux pastry balls were filled with ice-cold Hokey Pokey ice cream, decorated with chocolate sauce and icing sugar and placed on grilled orange. It was heavenly! :) We wolfed down each of our profiteroles in no time lol. The girls' father had the Baked Apple and Rhubard Pie. The vanilla bean ice cream went well with the crispy oven-baked pastry and the sweet-sour mix of apples and rhubard. :)



As we had to attend a wedding dinner, the girls had dinner by themselves at home. However, before we left, Marieann made a birthday wish before blowing out the candle on her birthday cake. :)

Trim and Dessert

I finally couldn't take it anymore - the nagging from my girls about my hair being too long. :P So I went to the hairdresser's. It was supposed to be a hair cut but I just couldn't bear to cut short my hair so it ended up being a trim, lol. You could imagine what my girls said when I came home. "Mama, how come you didn't cut your hair?!" Hahaha. I did trim my hair, just 1.5 inches off, lol. :P

After dinner, I needed something sweet in my system. We went to Great World City. I bought the girls some hair clips which they have been pestering me to buy for them before going to Cedele for some cakes. We ordered Mango Almond Cake ($6.50), Chocolate Banana Expresso Cake ($6) and Apple Nut Cheesecake ($6.5)to share. Out of the 3 cakes, I love the cheesecake best. Ok, maybe because I am a cheese person. But it really tastes good. There is a generous amount of apple shreds within the cheesecake which gave the cheesecake more bite and texture. The apple which is sourish made the cheesecake less cloying too.

Ramen Dinner

Told you, once the parents are away, time for me to fly the coop too, lol. Only joking. We had to bring a fan that was recently bought for repair at Best Denki. So I thought since we would be out, might as well have dinner outside too, right? Makes sense, doesn't it?

We went to the nearest Best Denki which is at Great World City. It took the girls' father about 30 minutes to settle the fan's repair. We went to have dinner around 8pm at this newly opened Japanese Ramen restaurant, Bishamon Sapporo Ramen.

I ordered a Shio Ramen ($12) which came with a piece of Shar Chou, sliced bamboo shoots and sesweed, with additional orders of two soft boiled eggs ($1 each) (to share with the girls). The girls' father ordered a Special Miso Ramen ($13.50) which came with a piece of Shar Chou, sliced bamboo shoots, soft-boiled egg, corn, and seaweed. We also ordered Fried Prawns ($8) and Pork Katsu ($6) for the girls to share.



I think I have tasted better ramen. The soup for both our ramen were too salty for our liking. The shar chou wasn't the kind that would melt in your mouth when you bite into it. The ramen too, just didn't have enough bite to it when you bite into it. I was disappointed with this dinning experience. This is the first time that I wanted to get out of the restaurant as soon as possible.

The saving grace of today's dinner was the Orange Apricot Cake which we had at Cedele. =) I wanted some tea to wash down the saltiness of the ramen. We went to Cedele to have a look and chanced upon the lovely Orange Apricot Cake, lol. The cake was really yummy - the cream cheese frost icing on the cake and the sponge cake was not too moist nor dry. We enjoyed the cake very much and it went well with my peppermint tea. :)




The girls enjoyed themselves on the kiddie ride and "playing" on the XBox console. Future XBox gamers in the making? Lol.
