PhD Holders vs Projector

How many PhD holders are needed to set up the projector?
One of our colleagues needed to set up his notebook to link to the projector for our meeting. However, the technician wasn't around so we were on our own. It started with one, then two, then three and in the end there were 3 PhD holders, 1 PhD candidate, and 1 manager who were mulling around the controls and trying to work out how to fix up the projector. Unfortunately after 15 minutes, still nothing. In the end, it was another manager, the 6th person, who managed to set it up lol.
In the end , none of the PhD holders were able to fix up the projector. LOL. What my mother said on an occasion suddenly makes sense - the more educated you are, the more stupid you become. Perhaps we stop being an all-rounder once we started specialising in our area of knowledge. Perhaps we stop learning about other areas unrelated to our area of expertise. Perhaps we also become more adverse to taking risk... Perhaps we should start learning again about everything else around us.

E-learning Again

It is e-learning day again for the girls because it is PSLE Listening Comprehension today. Primary 1 to 5 students need not report to school today and instead would have e-learning via MC Online portal. Recalling how much IT issues the girls had for their last e-learning days, I decided to work from home so that I could help them out if they encounter any IT issues as well as to keep an eye on them.
Today's e-learning was a breeze for the girls. No IT trouble at all. :)

Windows 8

During lunch break, my colleagues and I dropped into Challenger, an IT store to look at the latest operating system on PCs, notebooks, etc.: Windows 8.
Haha, it looks like my Nokia Lumia 800. :P I love Windows 8 already lol. I love the tiles, the colours, the interface lol. I am thinking if I should get a new netbook... :P

Appreciation and Farewell(?)

Today is the Appreciation Lunch for our research centre's IT staff, Redzuan, Swee Lin and Terrence. They will be leaving our centre and re-assigned to the institute's IT department.

The show started at 11:30am. One of our PMs, Pauline recited limericks which she composed about each of our IT staff. We had a slide show of the journey of our IT department since it started in 2003 to the present. Then we had our own "Loanshark Beng" who was hilarious when commenting on the words we had written for our IT staff. Never knew being Beng can be so funny. :P Finally we have our dear IT staff, Redzuan, Swee Lin and Terrence say a few words each, followed by lunch. :)

Well, Redzuan, Swee Lin and Terrence, thank you for all the help you have given me over the years with regards to IT. All of you can now have peace of mind knowing from 1 Feb 2009 onwards, that when the phone rings, it won't be me. Haha. :P You see, I have a very high tendency rate of having IT problems! :P I will never forget the 5-second pause which always followed my "This is Hwei Ming" announcement on the phone before their reaction of "Auntie, what you want?". Hahaha. Hmm, how come you all react in the same way?! LOL. :)

I wish Redzuan and Swee Lin all the best in your next work assignment and all the best to Terrence for your coming exams. :) We will miss you very much. I know I will, being the IT-idiot I am, hahaha!! Do come back and visit us when you can. :) Take care.

Carnivore and IT Gadgets

We went back to Vivocity today, lol. Might as well since I have to go to Esprit to exchange my current card for a new one which has more perks, lol. Received vouchers with the new card, plus my birthday perk of 20% discount throughout the month, lots of reason for me to shop, hahaha. Bought a new blouse already from Esprit, yes, starting to celebrate my birthday early, lol.

As we have never tried it before, we went to Carnivore Brazilian Churrascaria. It was buffet lunch ($29++ for adults, $15++ for children 5 - 12 years). The salad bar had quite a good range of cold and hot dishes. The girls had their fill just from the salad bar alone.

The girls were rather impressed by the gentlemen who came round to the table with skewers of meat and big knives, lol. There were so many varieties of meat to try and there was not enough space in my stomach! Hahaha. No wonder, a good friend said he would starve himself before eating at Brazilian Churrascaria, lol. I tried everything once: chicken, chicken breast wrapped in bacon, honey ham, pork shoulder, butterfish, pork sausage, and pineapple. Some I just had to have seconds such as chicken breast bacon, chicken, honey ham. Most of the meat were quite tasty, only the sausage was a little too salty and the pork shoulder was a little too dry.

Overall, I think the food was not bad and would definitely come back. I enjoyed the salad bar, hmmm, maybe that was my mistake, I had too much salad before the meat. Lol.

After walking around for two hours, we had a tea break. Yes, we could still eat after the heavy lunch. Actually, it was just the little eating machine aka Juliane and I having butter toast and tea-ci kosong. Lol.

***
While the girls had their afternoon nap, actually it was close to evening, their father and I went to Funan. He wanted to get a thumbdrive and I wanted to get my printer. But in the end, he left empty-handed. I got my brother MFC-7220, 5-in-1 Laser Companion (printing, faxing, copying, scanning and pc faxing). Happy. Can start printing stuff, lol. Besides my printer-cum-fax, I also bought myself a 4GB SanDisk thumbdrive. Hahaha. Yes, I am really celebrating my birthday early, lol. :)

IT Savvy (NOT)

When I returned home after counselling, I discovered that I couldn't log on to my various Internet accounts even though there was Internet connection. The only thing I could log on was my work place email. Maybe something is telling me I should work, huh? Hahaha.

I couldn't log onto my hotmail, gmail and my blogger accounts as well as msn. It was very, very frustrating for me. There seemed to be something wrong with my Internet security, or firewall or proxy setting or whatever it is. Being not very IT savvy, it took me the whole afternoon and a better half of tonight, trying to figure out what was wrong. Only managed to get access into my accounts again about 10 minutes ago. I can now put up my blog post, check my hotmail and gmail accounts and reply my emails. Happy. But I had no idea what I had done to solve the problem. So if the same problem occurs, I will have no idea how to remedy it again. Better pray HARD it doesn't happen again. Lol.
