"Brimstone". What an adrenalin rush! Your description has been so apt!! Pendergast is like Sherlock Holmes but with more speed. Pendergast has got the same kind of intellectual prowess, same deductive reasoning skills, and the same kind of astute observation. He also has a loyal friend, D'Agosta, just like Sherlock Holmes has Dr. Watson. For those of you who enjoy reading Sherlock Holmes, you won't go wrong reading Preston & Child's Pendergast series!
"Brimstone" started with a gruesome murder which seemed to be committed by something from another realm. From there, the action just kept snowballing, together with plenty of twists and turns, and surprises too. There is not a slow moment in "Brimstone". You won't be able to resist reading just one more page, and just one more chapter. You won't be able to put the book down until you have finished it. So be warned, if you want to read "Brimstone", make sure you don't read it just before bed or you will find yourself staring at sunrise when you are done with the book. =)
Now, I can't wait to go on to the second book!

Midnight SA, thanks for your great recommendation. Relic is one of the Pendergast series, right? Is it after Brimstone or is it before Brimstone? P didn't really die right? He's coming back like Sherlock Holmes did, isn't it. I can see some parallels between them. :)
Anyway, did you manage to see my comment under the post: "Ice Station"? So did you think I was the "sob sob romance" only reader before you knew my taste in reading? Hahaha. Hope my posts gave you a little insight into the types of movies I like. So do you like to watch movies? What types?

Yes, Relic is before Brimstone but featured only a minor occurence for Pendergast in there, although the main characters in it do appear in the latest Pendergast book. Relic itself is a good read (ignore the movie which was really bad) so it wouldn't hurt, if only to be familiar with what will eventually be a returning character. The Pendergast novels actually 'breaks' into two threads. One is a stand alone and the other is the Diogenes 'mythology' (like the XFiles Mythology series). In chronological order (with the Mythology with *):-
1. Relic
2. Reliquary
3. Cabinet of Curiosities
4. Still Life with Crows
5. Brimstone *
6. Dance of Death *
7. Book of the Dead *
So now you have two options - you can continue to read forward and get Dance of Death and Book of the Dead both available in NLB LOL. Or read backwards to get Relic, Reliquary, Cabinet and Still Life (not as great this one).
If you have to read, I'd suggest reading - Cabinet next (Relic/Reliquary is optional), then Dance and Book. Cabinet has some key clues in there that links up to the later books so that's an essential read. Although to be honest, Relic, Reliquary, Still Life are all fun reads!
