Singapore AVA banned eleven starch based products from Taiwan due
to contents of Maleic Acid. Maleic acid is usually used as a compound in
products such as glue, paper and various kinds of wrapping materials. The
compound is hazardous to human health if consumed.
The starch-based products are mainly tapioca starch which is made use in most bubble tea.
This ban is timely, happening just before we go to Taiwan next week. We will definitely be avoiding all bubble teas (much to my mother's happiness) as well as fried stuff, I guess. Look at it this way, at least we will be eating more healthily when we are in Taiwan lol. :P
