Civil War series
Good friend passed me the Civil War series graphic novels to read, The Road to Civil War, Civil War and New Avengers 5: Civil War.
This series make very interesting reading! It is about superheroes being involved in a civil war against other superheroes. It is basically an idea taken from that of the American Civil War. The superheroes led by Captain America opposed the Super Human Registration Act which was supported by Iron Man and his band of superheroes. The series tackled many issues such as "slavery" (in a way), human rights (in this sense, super human rights), friendship, family, government. There is more to this Civil War series than just very nice graphics. The story is very compelling with the real-life issues that it tackles.
There are several graphic novels in this series. Check it out at The Trade Paperback List for the synopsis of the various Civil War series graphic novels. You can borrow from the library too if you don't fancy buying them. But one downside, the library doesn't have all the series on hand. May need to wait. Lol.

Wolverine: Origin
This graphic novel talked about (as the title already suggested) the beginnings of Wolverine's earliest struggle against his enemies and the beast within himself. The story is really interesting and unexpected. It helps to explain some things about Wolverine. The graphics is, of course, very nice. I really like this style of drawing. Lol.

Ahhh the Civil War series by Marvel! I don't know if it's really based around the American Civil War but its undertones share commonalities with the current "War Against Terror" that America is waging against the world. The 9/11 event has suddenly made Americans aware that they're not as well loved as they thought they are, nor are they perceived to be the benefactors and heroes of democracy. It also made them very paranoid of a specific group of people, irregardless of how diverse these people are. I've friends who are Singaporeans but bearing Muslim names, who automatically get targetted and questioned when they enter the US, just because of their religion. It is a sad thing.
Civil rights vs sense of security.
Freedom vs security.
Which would you choose? For yourself, for your family, for your loved ones.
That's why I like comics now more than before, because they tackle hard hitting issues like these.
SA (who is secretly reading your blog on and off LOL)
Hi SA,
LONG time no hear from you. How are things?
Hmm.. having read Fantastic Four and Spiderman Civil War now, I see what you mean about the graphic novels sharing commonalities with the current "War Against Terror" that America is waging against the world. The Super Human Registration Act, to me, is a form of "slavery": the loss of rights, justice and freedom. Thus, I liken it to that of the American Civil War. As you can see, I have also answered your question as to what would I choose - civil rights and freedom over security. This is just me :P. Yes, you are right. Comics is no longer child's play, they are no longer just a mindless read. They do tackle such deep thought-provoking issues. :)
Hope to hear from you soon. Take care.
